There are two types of benders on the market. One style is horizontal and the other is vertical. The following may help you in deciding which is best for you. Horizontal units require a lot of floor space. As an example, to make a 40" hoop, you will need a minimum of 40" in front and on one side of the horizontal bender. If you purchase a horizontal unit that is not powered by hydraulics, you will need to make a very strong mount and will also need a long bar to bend tubing. Some horizontal benders do not use a full-length follow bar. And some do not have a roller system which means the major die or the follow die has to slide on the tubing, requiring oil or grease and creating a mess.

Dies and follow bars are the key to a good super-speedway quality bend. Steel or aluminum work equally well but, remember, aluminum weighs just one-third as much as steel. Some benders have 35-40 lb steel dies. The main reason for steel dies is cost.

Vertical benders come in two styles. One is the bottle jack-driven bender, which is very slow. Other vertical benders utilize small square-tube frames that are simply bolted together. With some tubing requiring up to 15,000 lbs of pressure to start a bend, that's a lot of stress on the frame and bolts.
